At the cancellation screen, App Store developers can present messages, images or offers. Our analysis examines how clearly subscribers can understand and dismiss them.

What happened

Apple's November 4 developer announcement introduces messages inside the cancellation process for recurring App Store subscriptions. Developers can display an explanation, an image or an offer as a customer considers leaving.

The company says App Store Connect supports eligibility settings and intervals between messages. A separate API can select content using subscription information; access to that interface requires a request.

Our analysis

A useful reminder could help someone find a feature they overlooked. The same placement could also become an obstacle if it pressures people who have already decided to leave. The meaningful product test is whether the offer is understandable and dismissal remains straightforward. Apple's announcement describes the tools, but provides no evidence yet of better customer satisfaction or reduced cancellations.

What to watch

  • Will developers measure user comprehension and ease of leaving alongside retention?
