2023 to 2026: tracking A-81 toward South Georgia
Near South Georgia’s underwater shelf, A-81 slowed after its northward journey, NASA reports. The October 20 image follows the iceberg’s January 2023 separation from Brunt Ice Shelf.
What happened
A NASA Terra satellite image acquired on October 20 shows iceberg A-81 near South Georgia. The October 27 Earth Observatory report says the berg’s progress slowed as it approached the island’s underwater shelf.
A-81 separated from the Brunt Ice Shelf in January 2023 and later travelled north from the Weddell Sea. NASA distinguishes normal ice-shelf calving from the scientific monitoring of changes around Brunt.
